Patcham High School, Brighton
Bradbury Electrical was tasked with delivering the electrical package for a new hall area at Patcham High School, designed to serve multiple functions such as hosting exams, school shows, parent evenings, and other large gatherings. This new hall would be a versatile space for both academic and extracurricular activities, requiring a carefully planned and comprehensive electrical system to ensure both functionality and safety.
The scope of work for this project involved installing a wide range of electrical systems, all tailored to support the school’s diverse needs in this new hall space. The systems were designed not only to provide adequate power and lighting but also to ensure the security of the building and the safety of its occupants.
Scope of Work
The electrical installation package at Patcham High School covered the following key systems:
Containment: The containment system involved the installation of various types of cable management infrastructure to organize and protect the electrical wiring throughout the new hall. This includes the use of cable trays, ducts, and conduits, which help to keep all cables securely in place and prevent any potential damage. Proper containment not only enhances the safety of the space by minimizing the risk of electrical faults, but also ensures ease of maintenance and future upgrades or modifications.
Electrical Distribution: Bradbury Electrical installed the electrical distribution system to deliver power safely and efficiently to the new hall. This included the installation of distribution boards, circuit breakers, and associated wiring. The distribution system ensures that electricity is routed appropriately to various sections of the hall, from lighting to power outlets and AV equipment. This system is designed to handle the required load for the hall’s multi-use functionality, ensuring that everything from stage lighting to computer systems operates seamlessly.
Lighting: A critical component of the installation, the lighting system was designed to be flexible, allowing the hall to be adapted for various events, including school performances, exams, and parent evenings. Different types of lighting were installed, including ambient lighting for general use and specialized lighting for the stage area. Stage lighting was also integrated, with adjustable fixtures designed to enhance performances during school shows. The system was designed to be energy-efficient, using LED lighting where possible, which helps reduce energy consumption and operational costs. Emergency lighting was included as part of the safety features to ensure the building remains safe during power outages or in the event of an emergency evacuation.
Power: The power system involved the installation of sufficient electrical outlets and circuits throughout the hall to accommodate the various equipment and devices that will be used in the space. This includes power for AV equipment, stage lighting, sound systems, and other necessary technology. Additional power outlets were installed to accommodate temporary setups for exams, presentations, or events that may require the use of computers, projectors, or additional equipment. Bradbury Electrical ensured that the power distribution was designed with flexibility in mind, allowing for easy configuration depending on the type of event.
Data Infrastructure: A data system was installed to support the digital needs of the hall. This infrastructure provides internet connectivity, networking for audio-visual equipment, and ensures that computers or digital displays can be easily connected. The data network also supports the school’s broader communication needs, ensuring that teachers, students, and staff can efficiently interact with technology in the space. The data system was designed to support both regular educational use and more specialized needs during events, such as multimedia presentations.
Fire Alarm System: The fire alarm system was an essential component of the installation to ensure the safety of students, staff, and visitors in the new hall. Bradbury Electrical installed smoke detectors, heat sensors, and manual call points in key areas of the hall to quickly detect any signs of fire or smoke. In the event of an emergency, the fire alarm will activate an audible alarm and visual indicators to alert everyone in the building and ensure a swift and safe evacuation. The system was also integrated with emergency lighting to guide individuals safely out of the building in case of a fire.
Security System: A security system was implemented to protect the hall and its contents. This included CCTV cameras, strategically placed to monitor the entrances and any potential vulnerable areas, helping to prevent theft, vandalism, or unauthorized access to the hall. Additionally, access control systems were installed to regulate entry into the hall, especially after hours or during events. The security system helps ensure the safety of both the building and the people using it, allowing for secure use during after-school hours, events, and other activities.
Outcome
The electrical package delivered by Bradbury Electrical significantly enhanced the functionality and safety of the new hall at Patcham High School. The newly created space now serves as a flexible venue that can accommodate a wide range of school activities, from exams and shows to parent evenings, providing both a high-quality environment and a safe, secure space for students, staff, and visitors.
Key benefits of the electrical installation include
Versatile Lighting: The hall now has a customizable lighting system that can be adjusted depending on the nature of the event, from bright lighting for parent evenings to atmospheric stage lighting for performances.
Comprehensive Power Supply: The power system is robust enough to support the varied requirements of the hall, from audio-visual equipment for presentations to electrical outlets for general use, ensuring everything runs smoothly during events.
Improved Safety: The installation of the fire alarm system and emergency lighting guarantees that the hall meets safety regulations and provides safe exit routes during an emergency. The CCTV and access control systems also improve the security of the building.
Enhanced Functionality: With the addition of data infrastructure, the hall is well-equipped to support digital presentations, internet access, and networking needs, making it suitable for a wide range of academic and extracurricular activities.
By delivering a reliable and flexible electrical package, Bradbury Electrical helped Patcham High School enhance its facilities, providing students, staff, and the wider school community with a well-equipped, secure, and functional space that will support educational and extracurricular activities for years to come.
